St. Barnabas is an active, growing community that provides nurture, support, & guidance to enable all its members to deepen their faith and to carry out Christ's work in the world.
St. Barnabas welcomes all children and youth to participate in our Church School! We gather just before the 10 a.m. service, and children join their families in the church at the Peace to share in the Eucharist.
To encourage and engage our youth in a deep and meaningful way, we created a Children’s Faith Formation Standards document which defines our expectations of learning for each age group, from nursery age through Confirmation. It is our hope this document will serve as an ongoing litmus of how well we are serving our children through our education programs. This document is available in the church office, please feel free to stop by and have a conversation about it.
To move us towards accomplishing these standards, we are changing our formation design. We are moving to a Sunday School program based on a four-week rotation. During each cycle, two weeks will be in the traditional classroom format and two will be more experiential, by design.
Here is an example of the new Sunday School format:
1st Sunday of the month Children’s Church
2nd & 3rd Sunday of the month “Traditional” Sunday School
4th Sunday of the month Movie for all ages
Children’s Church is a monthly event (mostly on the 1st Sunday of the month) in which our children gather in the Parish Hall which is “converted" into a children’s sized church. During this teaching session, the children experience a church service geared specifically to them, including a Children’s Sermon, a Children’s Creed and a Birthday celebration.
At the Peace, The Adult congregation is delighted by our youth processing into the church. Upon entering the church, the children move to the altar and the service continues with the celebration of the Eucharist as we are now all a part of the larger community.
The Movie week will almost aways be a lesson from Veggie Tales which are short enough that they will fill the time nicely. For years children have been mesmerized by the lovable characters from The VeggieTales. These videos, based on Holy Scripture, strive to teach values like kindness, forgiveness, and honesty in a fun way. I hope though these monthly showings these movies will become childhood favorites.
Come and see what all the excitement is all about!
