Adult Education & Spiritual Growth

Spiritual Development & Other
Study Groups

Bible Study
We have two Bible studies with fluid attendance between the two allowing for flexibility in schedules. One meets the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The other meets the second and fourth Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

These Bible Studies are designed to understand scripture more fully and apply it to our daily lives. All are welcome and previous knowledge is not necessary.

Thursday Evening Adult Education
This adult education program began with an Alpha course that ran repeatedly for several seasons. It is now a dinner and Bible study. Our goal is to grow in our Christian journey rather than “get through” Biblical texts in order to appropriate the "word" into our lives and understanding.

Ladies' Night Out
This group was formed to accommodate the schedules of working women though all women are welcome and attend. We share a meal, enjoy fellowship, and have a discussion on a previously determined topic that relates to our spiritual lives. For the last year or so we have been choosing books to read as a group. The discussion has been based on the book but is approached in a way that includes those who have not read it.

Sunday Afternoon Adult Education
These sessions (4pm-about 5pm), conducted by the Rector or lay volunteers, cover a very wide spectrum of topics and media from books to articles and even to some movies that address spiritual matters. Recently we studied and reflected on some of the writings and sermons of St. Augustine.

There is often a brief and highly readable book available at the first session to help guide us on our adventures. Other Sunday afternoon sessions are offered during special seasons of the church year.

Retreats
We offer retreats at St. Barnabas at least once a year. We have gone to Washington D.C., West Cornwall, CT., and to the island of St. Barth.

Breakfast Discussion Group
This group generally meets once a month on Tuesday for an early breakfast and fellowship. Discussion within a Christian context focuses on a contemporary event or issue that is of interest to members of the group.

Special Lenten Programs
See calendar for specifics.

Potluck Suppers and Other Special Programs
Periodically throughout the year, the Welcoming Committee sponsors special programs for the whole parish. These programs usually include a speaker on a variety of interesting topics.
